The Typewriter & The Pope

The Typewriter caught my eye on our first trip to Rome. I mean, really, its not like you can miss it! In no way does it blend in with the rest of Rome. It's a monsterous, white building......and I love it! Maybe it's the larger than life bluish green horses....I just knew I wanted to climb to the top this time since we didn't on our last trip.

The Vittorio Emanuele Monument is made out of white Brescian marble. It was built in the late 1800's in honor of Italy's first king. It's not well loved by Romans because of the amount of money that was spent building it and because it doesn't blend in with Rome's otherwise honey-gold color scheme. It's often referred to as the wedding cake or typewriter.

Just in case you missed yesterday's post.....it was HOT! in Rome but we climbed anyway. We took our time and the view from the top was worth it! You take an elevator the last part up and step out to seeing Rome from a different perspective. I didn't realize there were so many domed buildings scattered around Rome.

St. Peters Basilica was beautiful! It was neat to see where St. Peter is buried. The lighting inside wasn't great for taking pictures. I love taking pictures but I have so much to learn!!

Wednesday we went to the Vatican to see the Pope give his weekly public audience.
We didn't have tickets to sit in the chair section but we found a spot against the railing along the path around the chair section. The Pope rides in his little car along the path before going up on the platform.

The Vatican security guards fascinate me.....or rather there uniforms do. How could you put on an outfit like that everyday and keep a serious face as you go about serious business? I'd be so tempted to start doing cartwheels or pass out balloons to little kids!! They do look sharp though.

The day was made interesting when the 2 women behind Vivian and I felt like they should be the ones up against the rail. The lady behind me was reaching around my neck and putting her camara in front of my face so she could take pictures! When someone tries to morph into my body I take issue with that!!
The Pope rode right by us.....

People of all sorts came to see the Pope......

Young and Old.....

School groups.....

Coordinated Couples.....

Barcelona Fans ( More on that tomorrow ).....

I think I'll call it quits for now....I have a head cold and it's getting the best of me right now. I'll blog and add more pictures tomorrow :)

Blessings!

  1. Great post! I loved the typewriter, too. We didn't climb to the top. I'll have to return to do that. I heard that the guard uniforms were designed by Michelangelo. That can't be true, could it?
